What to Know About the New York Times Building

  • You’ve likely heard of the New York Times, one of the major newspapers in the United States, alongside the Washington Post. Founded in 1851, the New York Times is America’s leading newspaper of record. As its name suggests, this famous American newspaper has its headquarters in New York, in the heart of Manhattan, in the Midtown neighborhood.
  • The building opened in 2007 and stands 52 stories tall, reaching nearly 319 m (1,046 ft) at the tip of its spire, which itself rises 79 m (259 ft). The building echoes the Chrysler Building with an identical height. The structure was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano, who also created the Pompidou Center in Paris and The Shard in London. He also designed the Lyon International City and other major projects.
  • As the architect explains, “the building’s basic form is simple and reflects the right-angle grid of Manhattan’s streets.” Renzo Piano adds: “the building is designed to be as transparent and permeable as possible, expressing the newspaper’s culture of openness.”

What to See Inside the New York Times Building

  • You cannot visit the newsroom or go up to the upper floors. But you should feel free to push through the glass doors and explore the ground floor. This openness was a deliberate choice by Renzo Piano to make the building accessible to everyone, symbolizing the newspaper’s commitment to transparency. Interestingly, some New Yorkers actually use the ground floor as a shortcut between 40th and 41st Street!
  • Walk through the hall and head to the atrium level. You’ll discover a striking green space with birch trees growing in the middle of the building, made possible by a skylight above.
  • Back in the lobby, you can also see “Moveable Type,” an intriguing art installation created by Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin. It features multiple screens displaying texts from the newspaper. While you’re in New York, pick up a copy of the paper to take home as a souvenir!
