What You Need to Know About Spot in New York

  • Spot is a sculpture in New York depicting a female Dalmatian juggling a New York taxi on the tip of her nose. It’s wild! The moment Spot was installed, it immediately captured everyone’s attention. This 11.5 m (37.7 ft) tall artwork was created by American sculptor Donald Lipski.
  • The sculpture stands in front of the main entrance to Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, a new pediatric hospital that opened in June 2018 in Midtown, at the corner of 34th Street and First Avenue. The hospital has 68 beds and is part of the NYU Langone complex, one of New York’s largest hospital systems.
  • So why a giant Dalmatian playing with a taxi? Spot is designed to entertain young patients and help them forget about their illness for a while.
  • Here’s a fun fact: the sculpture was made from fiberglass in a Wisconsin factory. The taxi is an actual Toyota Prius donated by the Japanese automaker. While the engine was removed, everything else remains intact—the headlights turn on at night and the windshield wipers work when it rains. It’s definitely worth seeing during your visit to New York.
