What You Need to Know About the Fearless Girl on Wall Street

  • On March 8, 2017, International Women’s Day, a bronze statue of a fearless young girl was installed without permission across from the iconic Charging Bull at the entrance to New York’s Financial District. The installation generated enormous attention.
  • The bronze statue was created by Uruguayan-born sculptor Kristen Visbal. It was quickly nicknamed “Fearless Girl.” The name fits: it takes real courage to stare down a bull.
  • The project’s creators, financial advisory firm State Street Global Advisors, wanted to draw attention to the wage gap between men and women, particularly in finance. The statue sparked heated debate between supporters and critics. The artist behind the Charging Bull even spoke out, claiming the 1.2 m (4 ft) tall girl mocked his work.
  • Faced with overwhelming public support for the girl, New York City decided to keep the statue. In 2018, it was relocated to face the New York Stock Exchange. Feminists couldn’t have asked for a better location. There was real concern the statue might end up in a less visible spot in the Financial District. Instead, the girl now stands at the heart of Wall Street, facing the center of global finance. The perfect platform to champion gender equality.
